Mewa Calculator

Mewa is the "year number" in Tibetan numerology: one of the nine cells of the magic square 3×3, whose lines each sum to 15. The birth mewa is determined by the year and remains for life; it corresponds to a color, element, and animal group.

Date of birth

The Tibetan year begins with Losar (February–March), not January 1: for births in January–February the calculator will use the previous year and mark this.

How the calculator works

Tibetan numerology uses nine "mewas" — birth year symbols, each corresponding to one cell of the magic square 3×3 (the sum of any row, column, or diagonal is 15). A mewa is determined by the year of birth and remains for life. Mewa counting proceeds in descending order: 1 → 9 → 8 → … → 1. The starting point is the 17th Tibetan 60-year cycle, which began in 1987. The formula for the Gregorian year is: ((1987 − year) % 9 + 9) % 9 + 1. For example: 1987 → mewa 1, 1988 → 9, 1989 → 8, 1990 → 7, and so on until 1995 → 2, 1996 → 1 (the cycle closes). Cross-referencing with the animal mewa table gives 10 out of 10 matches for 1987–1996. Each mewa is associated with a color, an element, and an animal group — more on that below.

A key feature of Tibetan numerology: the year boundary is not January 1 but Losar — the Tibetan New Year, which falls between mid-February and mid-March (the exact date is determined by the Tibetan lunisolar calendar and changes each year). This means that people born in January or early February technically belong to the previous Tibetan year and therefore the previous mewa. The calculator uses a simplified but documented boundary: if the birth month is January or February (i.e., before the March Losar), the previous year is taken, with a corresponding note in the result. If you were born after Losar (usually the second half of February or March), no adjustment is needed — the birth year is used as-is. The exact date of Losar for a specific year can be found in Tibetan calendar references.

Each of the nine mewas is associated with a color and an element: white (1, 6, 8), blue (2, 3), green (4), yellow (5), red (7, 9); elements are iron (1, 6, 8), water (2, 3), wood (4), earth (5), fire (7, 9). The information is given per the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia as the primary variant. However, Tibetan tradition contains discrepancies between sources: for mewas 2, 3, and 9, Alexander Berzin lists different colors — black, dark blue, and burgundy respectively. These discrepancies are noted in the calculator results. Mewa meanings (past lives, character, lifespan) are based on retellings of "The White Emerald" and are presented as "by tradition" — this is the symbolism of Tibetan astrology, not a literal prediction or scientific fact.
