Mewa 1 (White, Iron): Meaning and Interpretation

Квадрат мев (тибетская таблица чисел). Собственная разработка NumerologyWiki.

What Is Mewa 1

Mewa 1 is one of the nine mewas of Tibetan astrology. Mewas are numbers of the magic square 3×3 assigned to the year of birth; the word "mewa" (Tib. rme ba, རྨེ་བ; in another transcription — sme ba) means "spot, mole." Mewa 1 is white, and its element is iron (in Russian translations "metal" is also encountered).

Unlike Western numerology, where the date of birth is reduced to a "destiny number," mewa is determined by the year of the Tibetan calendar and remains with a person for life. According to tradition, it describes past lives with residual tendencies, character, health, probable lifespan, and recommended "pacifying" practices. All of this is interpretation from one of the traditional texts, not established facts (details in the "Controversial Points" section).

Mewa 1 by Birth Year and Animal Group

The white iron mewa corresponds to the years: 1987, 1996, 2005, 2014, 2023 — by Tibetan reckoning, for those born after Losar (the Tibetan New Year; on the boundary of the year, see the "How to Calculate Your Mewa" section).

Together with mewas 4 and 7, mewa 1 shares one animal group: Mouse (in other translations — Rat), Rabbit (Hare), Horse, and Bird. This card concerns the permanent birth mewa — keme; the annual mewa (bame) changes every year and is used in annual forecasts.

Mewa 1 Meaning According to the "White Emerald" Text

The detailed interpretation below is a retelling of the traditional Tibetan text "White Emerald" as presented by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia. This is not canon or scientific data: the text is one, and different authors place their own emphasis.

Past Lives

According to the "White Emerald" text, the bearer of mewa 1 was a king in a past life and then was born in heaven — in retellings this image is condensed to "king and celestial being."

Character

According to the text, in men mewa 1 manifests as bravery; a woman with this mewa is described as independent and "not yielding in property." General traits attributed to mewa 1 are nervousness and irritability, along with a kind heart.

Health

According to the text, there is a tendency toward problems with the sense organs; the exact nature is not detailed in the available retelling.

Children and Family

According to the text, children come with difficulty and "rather outside the home" — the birth of children is associated not with the domestic circle but with the outside world.

Wealth

According to the text, property is unstable: it is difficult to retain, it comes and goes.

Lifespan

According to the text, the lifespan is approximately 71 years; also mentioned are four obstacles (what these represent is not elaborated in the open retelling — this is a gap).

Next Rebirth

According to the text, the next birth is as a goat, sheep, duck, swan, demi-god (Noe jin), or a human in the mountains; birth in the naga realm is also possible. Pacifying practices are traditionally intended to improve this karmic result.

Pacification and Spirits

The "pacifying" practice for mewa 1 is the construction of a statue of Avalokiteshvara (the bodhisattva of compassion). The text names the provoking spirits as King (Gyalpo), a thumb-sized spirit, and Gongpo; the protectors are white female nagas (serpent-like spirits). Specifics of the rites are not provided in the open retelling.

How to Calculate Your Mewa

The mewa count runs in descending order: 1 → 9 → 8 → 7 → … → 1. The starting point is the 17th Tibetan 60-year cycle, which began in 1987. For the Gregorian year:

r = (year − 1987) mod 9

when r = 0 the mewa equals 1, otherwise — 9 − r + 1.

Verification for mewa 1: 2023 − 1987 = 36, 36 mod 9 = 0 → mewa 1. The other years in the table (1987, 1996, 2005, 2014) yield the same remainder of 0.

An important caveat — Losar: the Tibetan New Year falls in February–March, not on January 1. Those born before Losar belong to the previous Tibetan year — and to the previous mewa. For an accurate result, the year should be taken according to the Tibetan calendar. More on the system in the article on Tibetan numerology; online calculation in the mewa calculator.

Controversial Points

  • Color and element are consistent. For mewa 1, sources agree: white color and iron element — both in Berzin and in the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia. Discrepancies in colors in the mewa system concern other numbers (2, 3, and 9).
  • Interpretations are not canon. Detailed meanings ("71 years, four obstacles," "rebirth as goat, sheep, duck, swan, or naga," etc.) are taken from a single traditional text — "White Emerald" — as retold by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, a site with unclear legal status that itself copies materials. Other authors (F. Cornu, Namkhai Norbu) give different emphases. Therefore, all characteristics above are "according to the text," not established facts.
  • Gaps. Not detailed in the open retelling: the nature of the four "obstacles," the specific "pacification" rites, the correspondence of mewa 1 to its parkha (trigram). No specific scientific studies of mewa 1 have been found — the general critique of numerology and astrology applies.
