Number 2 in Numerology: Meaning and Significance
The number two is the first even number and the number of duality: a pair, a union, the two sexes. In numerology, it is traditionally associated with partnership, gentleness, and the Moon (in the Chaldean school), though the assessment of two varies across different schools—from…
Number 2 in the pythagorean : method and number meanings tradition
In the Pythagorean tradition, letters are assigned values 1–9 by their position in the alphabet, and multi-digit numbers are reduced to single digits by adding their digits; the double-digit numbers 11 and 22 ("master numbers") are not reduced. The Pythagorean assessment of two (as conveyed by Agrippa) is dual.
On one hand, 2 is the "first number," the first multiplicity: it is "not composed of numbers, but of a single unit" and is measured only by the unit—the common measure of all numbers. This is "the first branch of unity and the first generation," called generation and Juno; the first form of evenness, the number of equality, extremity, and distance, "the number of knowledge, memory, and light," "the number of man."
The number two is also the number of mercy, mutual love, marriage, and society: "two shall be one flesh" (Gen. 2:24), "two are better than one" (Eccl. 4), two sexes—male and female.
On the other hand, according to Eusebius, Pythagoras taught that "the unit is God and the good mind, the number two is the devil and the evil mind"; therefore the Pythagoreans said that "two is not a number but a kind of confusion of units." Plutarch reports: two was called discord and insolence.
In Agrippa's view, the number two is the "middle," capable of both good and evil, the beginning of division and matter. Jerome (as conveyed by Agrippa) explained why on the second day of creation it was not said "good": "the number two is evil"; hence unclean animals entered the ark in pairs.
According to Agrippa, the number two is "unfortunate in predictions," especially in "Saturnian or Martian affairs," and by superstition it conjures phantoms to night travelers.
Agrippa reduces the correspondences of two into a "scale": Yah and El (the exemplary world), angel and soul (the intelligible), Sun and Moon (the celestial), Earth and Water (the elemental), heart and brain (the microcosm), Behemoth and Leviathan (the infernal). He also lists the pairs of Scripture: the two tablets of the Law, the two cherubim, the two natures of Christ, the two Covenants, the two commandments of love.
It should be noted: in the Pythagorean school, there are no detailed interpretations of the "personality of number 2" as found in the Chaldean school of Cheiro; the Pythagorean material is cosmological and theological.
Strengths and weaknesses
По халдейской школе (Cheiro; это пересказ школы, а не универсальная истина — в пифагорейской школе таких списков в открытых источниках не найдено) к сильным сторонам числа 2 относят:
- мягкость и дипломатичность, умение выстраивать партнёрские отношения;
- богатое воображение, артистичность и романтичность;
- изобретательность (пусть и без напора «единиц»);
Compatibility
Compatible with numbers: 1, 4, 7.
Number 2 in the chaldean : method and number meanings tradition
Cheiro describes the "Chaldean and Hebrew alphabet" as a system whose origin "is lost in antiquity": letters receive values by "vibration," not by position in the alphabet, and there is no number 9 in the alphabet. In the Chaldean school (Cheiro), "the number 2 symbolically represents the Moon" and "has the feminine attributes of the Sun"; therefore people of numbers 1 and 2, opposite in character, form harmonious combinations.
In Cheiro's planetary table, the Sun and Moon are the only planets with "double numbers": 1—4 (Sun–Uranus) and 2—7 (Moon–Neptune), between which there is "sympathy and attraction."
Practical correspondences of the number two in the Chaldean school:
Correspondence | Meaning (according to Cheiro) |
|---|---|
Planet | Moon; secondarily—Neptune (double number 2—7) |
Birth days of "people of number 2" | 2nd, 11th, 20th, 29th of the month |
Lucky days | 2, 11, 20, 29; Sunday, Monday, Friday |
Colors | all shades of green, cream, white; avoid dark colors (black, purple, dark red) |
Stones | pearl, moonstone, pale green stones; jade—if possible against the skin |
An important caveat: the "Chaldean" attribution is disputed—no ancient Chaldean texts on numerology have survived; Cheiro himself acknowledged that he had formulated the "secondary numbers" into practical form himself, "based on extensive research and experience."
Number 2 in the каббалистическая : методы и значение чисел tradition
Gematria is a method of Jewish exegesis: a word is assigned the sum of the numerical values of its letters, and words with equal gematria are symbolically connected (for example, 358 is the gematria of serpent, messiah, and sacrifice); the term has been known since the 2nd century CE and is widely used in Kabbalah. Here the number two is the numerical value of the letter Bet (ב).
In Agrippa's "scale of two" (16th-century Christian Kabbalah), it corresponds to the two-letter names of God—Yah (יה) and El (אל)—as well as to angel and soul as two intelligible substances.
Important: in gematria itself, the "character of number 2" is not developed—the method works with words and names; interpretations of the personality of number 2 are the domain of later schools (Cheiro, etc.), not Kabbalah.
Number 2 in the ведическая : метод и значения чисел tradition
In popular Vedic tradition, the number 2 is associated with the Moon (Chandra): in the common scheme of "number–planet" correspondences, the Moon is assigned to the number two. According to tradition, the lunar nature endows "two" with emotionality, receptivity, intuition, and a tendency toward partnership. In Vedic numerology, the number two can serve as the soul number (birth day reduced to a single digit) or the destiny number (sum of all digits of the full birth date); the soul number traditionally describes a person's inner essence and desires. Caveat: modern "Vedic numerology" is a popular practice of the 20th–21st centuries, traced back to Jyotish, where numerical predictions are only a subdivision of horā—ankajyotiṣa ("numerical astrology"); this method is not described in encyclopedic sources.
Number 2 in the китайская : числа, ло-шу и число гуа tradition
In Chinese tradition, the number two is an even number, and in the Yin-Yang classification, even numbers are considered Yin and feminine (odd numbers are Yang and masculine); the pair itself symbolizes the duality of Yin and Yang in Chinese cosmology. In the Lo Shu magic square, where the sum along any line is 15, even numbers are placed in the corners, and the number two occupies the upper right corner—in Chinese map orientation, this is the southwest (the number one is at the bottom, in the north, and the number nine is at the top, in the south). In popular homophonic symbolism, the number 2 is good: "good things come in pairs," and in Cantonese it sounds like "easy" and "bright." Unlike Western schools, in Chinese tradition the birth date is not reduced to a "destiny number": the meaning of a number is determined by context and homophony.
Number 2 in the майя: календарь цолькин, кины и печати tradition
In Mayan numerology, the number 2 is the second tone of the 13-day cycle of the sacred Tzolk'in calendar (260 days = 13 numbers × 20 day names). In modern interpretations, the second tone is called "Lunar" and associated with polarization and choice; however, the names of the thirteen "tones of creation" are part of the Dreamspell system (José Argüelles, 1990) and are not documented in encyclopedic sources. Historically, the number 2 in the Tzolk'in is simply the second day number in the 13-day cycle: the day number and name changed simultaneously, and the full combination repeated every 260 days. Important: the ancient Maya did not have a "numerology" as a doctrine—the "Mayan horoscope" with seals and tones is a modern reconstruction, while the ancient heritage is a calendar with sacred day symbolism and a vigesimal number system.
Number 2 in the тибетская : мева, парка и календарь tradition
In Tibetan tradition, numbers 1–9 are the numbers of mewas—symbols of birth year, not "destiny numbers" in the Western sense: the system is different, and the calculation is based on the Tibetan calendar, not the birth date. Mewa 2 is not the same as the number two in Western numerology—only the numbering coincides. If your mewa by birth year is 2, see the card "Mewa 2" and the mewa calculator.
According to tradition, mewa 2 is blue, and the element is water (according to Berzin, it is black). Together with mewas 5 and 8, it belongs to the group of animals Tiger, Snake, Monkey, Pig. According to the text of the "White Emerald" as recounted in the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, the owner of mewa 2 is soft in speech but strong within: they are attributed with a cold temperament, reticence, nervousness, and aggressiveness; the number of children is two to three. The lifespan is not mentioned in the available account. For pacification, the tradition recommends building a statue of Vajrapani.
Disclaimer: the information is based on the traditional text "White Emerald" as recounted in the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia; it is symbolism, not a literal prediction.
