Name Compatibility in Numerology: Calculation Methods

Таблица гематрии: соответствия букв и чисел. Источник: Wikimedia Commons, CC0.

What Is Name Compatibility

Name compatibility is a practical application of numerology in which the numerical values of the letters of two names are compared with each other. According to tradition, names that produce similar or harmonious numbers indicate people who find it easier to get along. An important caveat: all interpretations below are "according to tradition," not established facts. Numerology is not a science and is for entertainment and educational purposes; for more on its scientific status, see the "Controversial Points" section.

Unlike date-of-birth compatibility (where life path numbers are compared), name compatibility works with the numerical values of letters. Two names are required for the calculation; a date of birth is not mandatory, although Cheiro uses it to check the "vibration" between the name number and the birth number — this is an additional, not a mandatory step.

Name Compatibility Calculator

The compatibility calculator for two people operates on a separate page: two names are entered, a system is chosen (Pythagorean or Chaldean), and optionally the "include surname" option is selected. The output is the numbers of both names, their difference/sum, and a compatibility assessment.

To proceed to the calculation: name compatibility calculator.

An important caveat: compatibility percentages on the site are a calculator tool, a simplification for visual clarity. In the original sources — neither in Cheiro, nor in Agrippa, nor in Wikipedia — there are no compatibility percentages. Cheiro uses qualitative characteristics: "harmonious vibration," "affinity," "disharmony." Details in the "Controversial Points" section.

What Calculation Methods Exist

Several approaches to comparing names have emerged in popular numerology. Let us examine each.

By Name Number

The primary method described by Cheiro in "Book of Numbers" (chapters XII–XVI). Letters of the name are assigned numerical values according to a correspondence table, summed, and reduced to a single digit (the fadic number). The resulting number is called the "name number" or, in popular terminology, the "destiny number."

The principle: if the numbers of two people's names match or are "interchangeable" (belong to the same series), their vibrations are harmonious. If they differ, disharmony is possible. According to Cheiro, "the name number and birth number should be in vibration"; if they are not aligned, it is advisable to change the spelling of the name — add or remove a letter so that the sum changes.

By the Sum of Letters Without Reduction (Compound Number)

The compound number is the "raw" sum of the name's letters before reduction. According to Cheiro (chapters XII–XIII), the compound number has its own symbolism — through the Tarot table (major arcana 1–22, where numbers above 22 are reduced to a single arcana). The compound number shows "hidden influences," while the reduced number shows "how a person appears in the eyes of others."

Example: the full name "Napoleon Bonaparte" in the Chaldean table yields compound number 76 → 13 — "The Power That Destroys Itself" (Napoleon = 41, Bonaparte = 35). The name "Baldwin" — 22 = "The Blind Good Man" (B=2, A=1, L=3, D=4, W=6, I=1, N=5). Comparing the compound numbers of two names is one way to analyze compatibility, although Cheiro does not provide a separate compatibility table for this.

Through Aligning Name and Birth Numbers

Another Cheiro method (chapter XIV): the name number is compared with the birth number (day of the month). If they match or are interchangeable — harmony. Example: John Smith (name number 8), born January 8 — harmony; born on the 2nd — mismatch, with the advice to add a letter with value 3. This method is for one person (the alignment of their name with their date), not for comparing two names, but in popular practice it is sometimes adapted for paired analysis.

By Matching Letters

In popular practice, the number of matching letters in two names is counted. More matches — more compatibility. In verified sources (Cheiro, Agrippa, Wikipedia), this method is not described: it is a modern popular practice without an original source. In the text it is presented as "according to one popular interpretation," not as an authoritative method.

Through Gematria

Classical gematria compares the sums of letters of words — to find symbolic connections (words with equal gematria are considered connected). Applying this to name compatibility is a borrowing from gematria, but not its classical use. In Kabbalistic astrology there is a method of associating a name with a planet, but not the compatibility of two names. No specific name compatibility methods in Kabbalah/gematria have been found in verified sources.

Letter Correspondence Tables: Pythagorean vs Chaldean

To calculate a name number, you need to know which number replaces each letter. Several tables exist; the key ones are Pythagorean and Chaldean. The same letter yields different numbers in different systems, so the school used should always be specified in the calculation.

The Chaldean table was built for the Latin alphabet; Cyrillic adaptations are popular developments without a single canon.

Agrippa's Arithmancy (16th Century)

A third variant: letters are numbered by position in the Latin alphabet (A=1…I=9, K=10…S=90, T=100 and so on by hundreds). Letters U, J, W are not included. This is a 16th-century historical reconstruction, different from both the Pythagorean and Chaldean tables.

How to Calculate: Step-by-Step Guide

Let us walk through the calculation using two names as an example: ANNA and DMITRY.

Step 1: Choose a Table

We use the Pythagorean table (1–9 by alphabetical order).

Step 2: Break Each Letter into a Number

ANNA:

  • A = 1
  • N = 5
  • N = 5
  • A = 1

DMITRY:

  • D = 4
  • M = 4
  • I = 9
  • T = 2
  • R = 9
  • Y = 7

Step 3: Sum

  • ANNA: 1 + 5 + 5 + 1 = 12 (compound number)
  • DMITRY: 4 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 9 + 7 = 35 (compound number)

Step 4: Reduce to Single Digit

  • ANNA: 12 → 1 + 2 = 3
  • DMITRY: 35 → 3 + 5 = 8

Step 5: Compare

The numbers 3 and 8 differ. According to tradition, such numbers are not interchangeable and their compatibility requires attention. If both names yielded the same number (or numbers from the same series), this would indicate a harmonious vibration.

Step 6: Check Compound Numbers

  • ANNA = 12: in the Tarot table this is XII — "The Hanged Man" (sacrifice, a new perspective on the world)
  • DMITRY = 35 → 3 + 5 = 8: VIII — "Strength" (courage, inner strength)

Comparing compound numbers provides an additional layer of symbolism, but Cheiro does not have a separate compatibility table for compound numbers.

Example for the Chaldean Table

The same pair in the Chaldean table (Latin alphabet):

ANNA:

  • A = 1
  • N = 5
  • N = 5
  • A = 1

DMITRY:

  • D = 4
  • M = 4
  • I = 1
  • T = 4
  • R = 2
  • Y = 1
  • ANNA: 1 + 5 + 5 + 1 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3
  • DMITRY: 4 + 4 + 1 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7

In the Chaldean system, numbers 3 and 7 are again different. If one of the names had yielded 2, 4, or 7, the compatibility with the other three would have been more harmonious according to Cheiro (3, 6, 9 are interchangeable).

Name Number Compatibility: 9×9 Table

The primary body of data on number compatibility is provided by Cheiro in "Book of Numbers." Compatibility is described qualitatively: "affinity," "harmonious vibration," "interchangeable numbers." There are no percentages. Specific compatibility pairs are described for birth numbers, but in popular practice they are also applied to name numbers — this is an extrapolation, not a direct Cheiro quote.

How to Read the Table

  • Harmony / affinity — according to Cheiro, the numbers are in harmonious vibration; the pair is described positively.
  • Interchangeable numbers — numbers that can be considered "of the same order"; their alignment indicates similar energies.
  • Universal harmony 5 — according to Cheiro, the five combines with any number; there is no direct pair description, but the general rule applies.
  • Series 1—4 ↔ 2—7 — "affinity and attraction" between the Sun-Uranus series (1, 4, 10, 13, 19, 22, 28, 31) and the Moon-Neptune series (2, 7, 11, 16, 20, 25, 29).
  • Dissonance (Sepharial) — according to Sepharial (not Cheiro), the numbers are in opposition; the schools must not be mixed.
  • Caution: 4+8 — according to Cheiro, the combination 4+8 as "key numbers" is unlucky in attachments; this is a different context from "series affinity."
  • — (empty) — no separate pair description in open sources.

Limitations of the Table

The 9×9 table is a generalization; no specific compatibility tables for names specifically (not birth numbers) in the Pythagorean school have been found in verified sources. The data are taken from birth number descriptions (Cheiro, chapters III–XI) and extrapolated to name numbers. We do not fill gaps with assumptions.

Compatibility by Compound Number (Tarot)

The compound number is the "raw" sum of the name's letters before reduction, from 10 to 52. According to Cheiro (chapter XIII), each compound number corresponds to symbolism through the Tarot table (major arcana):

When comparing compound numbers, according to tradition, close or identical arcana indicate similar life scenarios and "hidden influences." If the compound number of one name is the "Wheel of Fortune" (10) and the other is "The Star" (17), this is interpreted as a harmonious combination of change and hope.

Important: there is no separate compatibility table for compound numbers (such as "pair 12 + 15 = bad" or "17 + 19 = good") in Cheiro or other verified sources. Comparing compound numbers is an interpretation by a practitioner, not a quote from the source.

Controversial Points: Differences Between Schools and Status of Methods

Absence of Ancient Methods

There is no specific "name compatibility calculation method" among the ancient Pythagoreans or in medieval Kabbalah. The Pythagoreans worked with symbolic analogies: according to Agrippa (Book II, chapters V, VIII, IX), the number 5 is "the number of marriage and justice," 2 — "the number of charity and mutual love, marriage and society," 6 — "the number of generation and marriage." But this is the symbolism of the numbers themselves, not a method for calculating the compatibility of two names. The modern name compatibility method is a construct of the 20th–21st centuries.

Cheiro — the Only Verified Source

Cheiro provides the only documented method of name compatibility, but his "Chaldean" attribution is disputed: there are no direct ancient Chaldean texts with such a table; the table is a 20th-century reconstruction. Nevertheless, it is the most detailed and cited source on the topic.

Percentages Are a Marketing Device

Neither Cheiro, nor Agrippa, nor Wikipedia provide compatibility percentages. The percentage on the calculator website is a tool for visual clarity. In the articles, percentages are marked as "a simplification for visual clarity; in the original sources they are absent."

Master Numbers 11/22/33

According to Cheiro: 11 = 2 (Moon series), 22 = 4 (Uranus series), 33 = 6 (24 = 6). In modern Western practice, 11/22/33 are master numbers and are not reduced. When calculating name compatibility this produces different results; we show both schemes and always indicate which school was used.

Cyrillic vs Latin

The Pythagorean and Chaldean tables were built for the Latin alphabet; Cyrillic adaptations are popular developments without a single canon. The calculator uses either transliteration or a separate "Russian" table with the caveat "according to one popular version."

Scientific Status

Tests (United Kingdom 1993; Israel 2012, 200 participants, experiment repeated twice) yielded negative results: numerologists' predictions were no different from random guessing. Numerology is not a science but a popular esoteric practice. A "according to tradition" disclaimer and entertainment/educational status are required.
