What Is Mewa 9
Mewa 9 is one of the nine mewas of Tibetan astrology, the red (in some sources burgundy) fire mewa. Mewa (Tib. rme ba, རྨེ་བ; also sme ba, སྨེ་བ — "spot, mole") is a number of the magic square 3×3 assigned to the year of birth according to the Tibetan calendar. Like other mewas, it belongs not to Western "destiny numerology" but to the "black calculations" (nagci) — the calendrical layer of Tibetan elemental astrology.
A distinction is made between keme — the birth mewa (constant for life) — and bame — the annual mewa. All interpretations are "according to tradition": they derive from retellings of traditional texts, primarily the "White Emerald," and are not canon. More on the system as a whole in the article Tibetan Numerology.
Birth Years of Mewa 9 and Animal Group
The mewa count descends (1 → 9 → 8 → 7 … → 1); the starting point is the 17th Tibetan 60-year cycle from 1987. Mewa 9 falls on the years:
Birth Years (after Losar) |
|---|
1988, 1997, 2006, 2015 |
The recurrence of the mewa with the same animal-element year occurs every 180 years. By the magic square, mewa 9 is associated with the animal group: Ox, Dragon, Sheep, Dog (together with mewas 3 and 6).
⚠️ The Tibetan New Year (Losar) falls in February–March: those born before Losar belong to the previous Tibetan year and the previous mewa. Only the Tibetan calendar gives an accurate result.
Past Life of Mewa 9 (According to the "White Emerald" Text)
According to the "White Emerald" text as retold by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, the past lives of the bearer of mewa 9 form a chain: underground spirit (dMu) → dog in a wealthy family → shaman, and in the last past life he was the son of a celestial physician. Therefore, tradition calls such a person blessed by the great physician of heaven.
Character of Mewa 9
According to the "White Emerald" text, the bearer of mewa 9 is attributed:
- a white, open mind — clear thinking, openness;
- great jealousy;
- a strong desire for property;
- emotionality.
The text also mentions the metaphor of "seven colors": the person as if holds seven sacred colors in the right and left hand — as long as they do not "part with them" (that is, do not lose their fortune), they do not need to depend on others. This is a figurative traditional illustration, not a literal description.
Health of Mewa 9
In the "White Emerald" retelling, there is no separate section on health for mewa 9 — this is a gap in the source.
Children and Family of Mewa 9
There is no information on children for mewa 9 in the "White Emerald" retelling either — a gap in the source. Only the risk of children being provoked by a "black spirit" is mentioned, which can be prevented by a prosperity-strengthening ceremony (see below).
Wealth of Mewa 9
According to the "White Emerald" text, the property of mewa 9 is unstable "like dew that appears and disappears": the person spends a lot and is emotional in financial matters. At the same time, the first half of life is described as difficult, and the second as happy and wealthy, provided the person preserves their fortune (does not lose "Yang" — prosperity).
Lifespan of Mewa 9
According to tradition, the lifespan for mewa 9 is about 70 years, with five obstacles. This is an astrological indication from the text, not a norm.
Next Rebirth of Mewa 9
According to the "White Emerald" text, if a person was involved in negative actions, the next birth may be as a dog, monkey, or poor woman. However, if they build a statue of Manjushri and recite his mantra, rebirth is promised as the son of a wealthy family, a wealthy (though stingy) person, or a celestial being.
Pacification of Mewa 9 and Special Instructions
For "improving karma," the "White Emerald" text recommends:
- building a statue of Manjushri and reciting the Manjushri mantra;
- conducting a prosperity-strengthening ceremony (Yang-sgrub) to restore and retain fortune (Yang).
The protectors of mewa 9 are named as the mountain spirit and the son of sMan-mo (a healing spirit). A special instruction: if a person keeps animals, offerings of "Yang" help restore prosperity.
How to Calculate Your Mewa
For the Gregorian year: r = (year − 1987) mod 9. When r = 0 the mewa equals 1, otherwise — 9 − r + 1. For mewa 9: (year − 1987) mod 9 = 1. For example, 1988 − 1987 = 1, 1 mod 9 = 1 → mewa 9; 1997 − 1987 = 10, 10 mod 9 = 1 → mewa 9; then every 9 years.
Caveat: the year is taken according to the Tibetan calendar (after Losar); those born in January–February often belong to the previous year. The ready calculation is in the mewa calculator and in the article Tibetan Numerology.
Verification by formula for recent years: 2024 → mewa 9, 2025 → mewa 8, 2026 → mewa 7. Those born in 2024 (after Losar) receive birth mewa 9.
Controversial Points
- Color of mewa 9. Sources diverge here: according to Berzin, mewa 9 is burgundy (sometimes red); according to the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, it is red. The card uses the dual variant "red / burgundy"; both forms are recorded in the hub table.
- Not canon. Detailed interpretations (past lives, 70 years of life, "rebirth as dog") are taken from a single traditional text — "White Emerald" — as retold by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, a site with unclear legal status. Other authors (F. Cornu, Namkhai Norbu) give different emphases; everything above is "according to the text of one source."
- Year correspondence. There is no direct authoritative table of "Gregorian year → mewa" in open sources: the formula is derived from Berzin's scheme and verified against the TBE animal mewa table (10/10), but online tables differ by one due to Losar.
- Status. Tibetan "numerology" is a layer of astrology, not a Western school; the word "mewa" in search is noisy with unrelated meanings.
