What Is Mewa 8

Mewa 8 is one of the nine mewas of Tibetan astrology, the white iron mewa. Mewa (Tib. rme ba, རྨེ་བ; also sme ba, སྨེ་བ — "spot, mole") is a number of the magic square 3×3 assigned to the year of birth according to the Tibetan calendar. In the Tibetan system, unlike Western numerology, the date is not reduced to a "destiny number": mewa is part of the "black calculations" (nagci), the calendrical layer of elemental astrology.

A distinction is made between keme — the birth mewa, constant for life — and bame — the annual mewa. All mewa interpretations are "according to tradition": they derive from retellings of traditional texts, primarily the "White Emerald," and are not canon. More on the system as a whole in the article Tibetan Numerology.

Birth Years of Mewa 8 and Animal Group

The mewa count descends (1 → 9 → 8 → 7 … → 1); the starting point is the 17th Tibetan 60-year cycle from 1987. Mewa 8 falls on the years:

Birth Years (after Losar)

1989, 1998, 2007, 2016

The recurrence of the mewa with the same animal-element year occurs every 180 years. By the magic square, mewa 8 is associated with the animal group: Tiger, Snake, Monkey, Pig (together with mewas 2 and 5).

⚠️ The Tibetan New Year (Losar) falls in February–March: those born before Losar belong to the previous Tibetan year and the previous mewa. Only the Tibetan calendar gives an accurate result.

Past Life of Mewa 8 (According to the "White Emerald" Text)

According to the "White Emerald" text as retold by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, the bearer of mewa 8 in a past life was first born in a "barbarian country" and then in heaven. He is considered blessed by the deity of the pure land Tushita, and so is called "son of a Deva."

Character of Mewa 8

According to the "White Emerald" text, the bearer of mewa 8 is attributed:

  • slowness, depth, and reserve — speaks little but to the point;
  • inner strictness (with outward restraint);
  • skilled hands: successful in crafts;
  • intellect and sharp thinking, aptitude for learning;
  • at the same time, a tendency under certain circumstances to perjury and empty talk.

It is also mentioned that such a person maintains two residences and enjoys the respect of people. All of this is "according to the text of one source," not a universal portrait.

Health of Mewa 8

According to the "White Emerald" text, health for mewa 8 is generally good: even if a person falls ill, illnesses are easily treated, especially in the later part of life, which is described as happy. The text does not prescribe a separate "health-preserving" practice.

Children and Family of Mewa 8

According to the "White Emerald" text, there are three or six children. Children are described as successful; it is mentioned that they (and the person themselves) may become lawyers.

Wealth of Mewa 8

According to the same text, the bearer of mewa 8 becomes wealthy in later life: fortune in property comes with time, not in youth.

Lifespan of Mewa 8

According to tradition, the lifespan for mewa 8 is about 50 years, with three obstacles. This is an astrological indication from the text, not a norm.

Next Rebirth of Mewa 8

According to the "White Emerald" text, the next life is most likely as a woman (birth in a female body). However, if a person builds a statue of Buddha, rebirth is promised as a sculptor or spiritual practitioner, and then as a celestial being (Deva).

Pacification of Mewa 8 and Special Instructions

For "improving karma," the "White Emerald" text recommends building a statue of Buddha. The text's main warning concerns grudges: the bearer of mewa 8 must not harbor resentment toward relatives and other people — according to tradition, the spirit of grudge can provoke a person, and this will destructively affect the future. This is the only danger named as "primary" for this mewa.

How to Calculate Your Mewa

For the Gregorian year: r = (year − 1987) mod 9. When r = 0 the mewa equals 1, otherwise — 9 − r + 1. For mewa 8: (year − 1987) mod 9 = 2. For example, 1989 − 1987 = 2, 2 mod 9 = 2 → mewa 8; 1998 − 1987 = 11, 11 mod 9 = 2 → mewa 8; then every 9 years.

Caveat: the year is taken according to the Tibetan calendar (after Losar); those born in January–February often belong to the previous year. The ready calculation is in the mewa calculator and in the article Tibetan Numerology.

Verification by formula for recent years: 2024 → mewa 9, 2025 → mewa 8, 2026 → mewa 7. Those born in 2025 (after Losar) receive birth mewa 8; those born in 2026 receive mewa 7.

Controversial Points

  • Not canon. Detailed interpretations (past lives, 50 years of life, "next birth as a woman") are taken from a single traditional text — "White Emerald" — as retold by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, a site with unclear legal status. Other authors (F. Cornu, Namkhai Norbu) give different emphases; everything above is "according to the text of one source."
  • Color and element. For mewa 8, sources agree: white, iron (Berzin and TBE). Color discrepancies in the system concern mewas 2, 3, and 9 — see the hub.
  • Year correspondence. There is no direct authoritative table of "Gregorian year → mewa" in open sources: the formula is derived from Berzin's scheme and verified against the TBE animal mewa table (10/10), but online tables differ by one due to Losar.
  • Status. Tibetan "numerology" is a layer of astrology, not a Western school; the word "mewa" in search is noisy with unrelated meanings.
