Mewa 7 (Red, Fire) — Meaning and Interpretation

What Is Mewa 7

Mewa 7 is one of the nine mewas of Tibetan astrology, the red fire mewa. Mewa (Tib. rme ba, རྨེ་བ; also sme ba, སྨེ་བ — "spot, mole") is a number of the magic square 3×3 assigned to the year of birth according to the Tibetan calendar. Unlike Western numerology, the Tibetan system does not reduce the date to a single "destiny number": mewa is part of the calendrical "black calculations" (nagci), a layer of elemental astrology.

In Tibetan practice, a distinction is made between keme — the birth mewa, which remains with a person for life — and bame — the annual mewa, which changes every year. All mewa interpretations are "according to tradition": they are drawn from retellings of traditional texts, primarily the "White Emerald," and are neither canon nor scientific data. More on the system in the article Tibetan Numerology.

Birth Years of Mewa 7 and Animal Group

The mewa count runs in descending order (1 → 9 → 8 → 7 … → 1); the starting point is the 17th Tibetan 60-year cycle, which began in 1987. By this scheme, mewa 7 falls on the years:

Birth Years (after Losar)

1990, 1999, 2008, 2017

The recurrence of the same mewa with the same animal-element year occurs every 180 years. By the magic square, mewa 7 is associated with the animal group: Mouse, Rabbit, Horse, Bird (together with mewas 1 and 4).

⚠️ The Tibetan New Year (Losar) falls in February–March: those born before Losar belong to the previous Tibetan year and the previous mewa. For accurate determination, the year should be taken according to the Tibetan calendar.

Past Life of Mewa 7 (According to the "White Emerald" Text)

According to the "White Emerald" text as retold by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, the past life of the bearer of mewa 7 was a mountain spirit (Tsen, bTsan) and demigod. The person is considered blessed by a mountain spirit, so their nature is described by the image of "an angry butcher with a sword" — that is, naturally angry and aggressive. This is a traditional figurative description, not a verdict on character.

Character of Mewa 7

According to the "White Emerald" text, bearers of mewa 7 are attributed:

  • aggressiveness and a strong ego — the person "does not avoid unwholesome deeds" and has difficulty tolerating interference in their plans;
  • nervousness and forgetfulness;
  • a brave heart and resourcefulness;
  • a love of red meat (reddish skin is also mentioned).

It is noted that these traits are manifestations of the influence of the spirit bTsan. As with all mewa interpretations, this is "according to tradition," not a universal characteristic of all people born in these years.

Health of Mewa 7

According to the "White Emerald" text, mewa 7 is associated with risks:

  • blood and stomach disorders;
  • skin problems from childhood (minor rashes, chronic sores);
  • danger from knives and metal — it is mentioned that descendants may also suffer "from metal" or while traveling.

These are traditional astrological indications from the text, not medical data.

Children and Family of Mewa 7

In the "White Emerald" retelling, the number of children for mewa 7 is fixed at seven. The text provides no family indications beyond this.

Wealth of Mewa 7

According to the "White Emerald" text as retold by TBE, the wealth of mewa 7 is described by the metaphor of "spring sun"; fortune in business comes from "white and red" goods, that is, dairy products and meat. This is a traditional astrological indication from the text, not a financial forecast.

Lifespan of Mewa 7

According to tradition, the lifespan for mewa 7 is about 80 years, with four obstacles. This is an astrological indication from the text, not a promise or norm.

Next Rebirth of Mewa 7

According to the "White Emerald" text, if a person was involved in negative deeds, in the next life they may be reborn as an insect, a red mountain dog, a wolf, or a preta (hungry ghost). As with everything in this section, this is a traditional karmic perspective, not a fact.

Pacification of Mewa 7 and Special Instructions

For "improving karma," the "White Emerald" text recommends:

  • building a statue of Tara and confessing negative deeds — then the next birth is promised as a man or a discipline-strict monk;
  • the bearer of mewa 7 needs a "spirit house" (rTen-mKhar) — a ritual structure — and veneration of the spirit bTsan, who can simultaneously provoke (problems with knives) and protect.

The general advice of the text: avoid fights and games with knives.

How to Calculate Your Mewa

For the Gregorian year: r = (year − 1987) mod 9. When r = 0 the mewa equals 1, otherwise — 9 − r + 1. For mewa 7: (year − 1987) mod 9 = 3. For example, 1990 − 1987 = 3, 3 mod 9 = 3 → mewa 7; 1999 − 1987 = 12, 12 mod 9 = 3 → mewa 7; and so on every 9 years.

Caveat: the year should be taken according to the Tibetan calendar (after Losar); those born in January–February often belong to the previous year. The ready calculation is in the mewa calculator and in the article Tibetan Numerology.

Verification by formula for recent years: 2024 → mewa 9, 2025 → mewa 8, 2026 → mewa 7. That is, the annual mewa for 2026 is 7, and those born in 2026 (after Losar) receive birth mewa 7.

Controversial Points

  • Not canon. Detailed interpretations (past lives, 80 years of life, "rebirth as insect," etc.) are taken from a single traditional text — "White Emerald" — as retold by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, a site with unclear legal status that itself copies materials. Other authors (F. Cornu, Namkhai Norbu) give different emphases, so everything above is "according to the text of one source."
  • Color and element. For mewa 7, sources agree: red, fire (Berzin and TBE). Color discrepancies in the system concern other mewas (2, 3, 9) — see the hub.
  • Year correspondence. There is no direct authoritative table of "Gregorian year → mewa" in open sources: the formula is derived from Berzin's scheme and verified against the TBE animal mewa table (10/10 matches), but online tables differ by one due to Losar and the choice of starting point.
  • Status. Tibetan "numerology" is a layer of astrology, not a Western school; the term "mewa" in search is noisy with unrelated meanings (cucumber variety, stroller).
