The "Pythagorean square" is one of the most popular queries in Russian-language numerology. According to tradition, it is a 3x3 table in which, from the date of birth, the number of times each digit from 1 to 9 appears is recorded, and then each cell is interpreted as a certain human quality — character, energy, health, luck, and others.
Let us state upfront: the numerological Pythagorean square is not the mathematical "square of a number," not the Pythagorean theorem, and not the Lo Shu magic square. More on these differences in a separate section below.
The second important caveat: the method we are about to discuss is modern. In popular Russian-language tradition, it is linked to the name of the mathematician and writer A. F. Alexandrov and his books of the 1990s-2010s, not to the ancient Pythagorean school: no historical continuity with Pythagoreanism has been attested.
More on the three different "Pythagoreans" in the article on Pythagorean numerology.

What Is the Pythagorean Square
The numerological Pythagorean square (in Russian-language tradition also called the psychomatrix) is a 3x3 grid filled with nine digits from 1 to 9:
1 | 2 | 3 |
|---|---|---|
4 | 5 | 6 |
7 | 8 | 9 |
In each cell, the number of times the corresponding digit appears in a person's date of birth and in additional calculated numbers is recorded. The key principle of interpretation is simple: the more digits in a cell, the more strongly the quality is expressed. Zero digits means the quality is in a "risk zone" or not manifested, one digit — weak manifestation, two — normal, three or more — strong manifestation, possibly to extremes.
It is important to understand that the numerological square is not a magic square. In the Lo Shu magic square, the sums of numbers along rows, columns, and diagonals play the main role — they must be equal. In the Pythagorean square, no sums are calculated: the values are only the frequencies of digit occurrences.
As already stated, the method is modern. There are no articles "Pythagorean Square" or "Psychomatrix" in either Russian or English Wikipedia, and full-text searches in open archives yield no results. In popular sources, the method is linked to the name of A. F. Alexandrov, but the original sources (his books) are not freely available, so all interpretations are a paraphrase of popular practice, not a citation of the original source.
How to Calculate the Pythagorean Square from the Date of Birth
The calculation consists of two steps: first, four working numbers are computed, then the table is filled. Below is the canonical variant adopted in popular practice; on discrepancies in other expositions — in the "Controversial" section.
Working Numbers
For the date of birth, the day, month, and year are added digit by digit:
- First working number — the sum of all digits of the date of birth.
- Second working number — the sum of the digits of the first working number.
- Third working number — the first working number minus twice the first digit of the day of birth.
- Fourth working number — the sum of the digits of the third working number.
Example: May 15, 1976 (15.05.1976)
- 1 + 5 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 6 = 34 — first working number.
- 3 + 4 = 7 — second working number.
- 34 - 2 x 1 = 32 — third working number (first digit of the day — 1).
- 3 + 2 = 5 — fourth working number.
Filling the Table
In the 3x3 table, the number of times each digit from 1 to 9 appears among all digits of the date of birth and the four working numbers is recorded. For our example, these digits are:
- date: 1, 5, 0, 5, 1, 9, 7, 6;
- working numbers: 3, 4, 7, 3, 2, 5.
We count the frequencies: ones — 2, twos — 1, threes — 2, fours — 1, fives — 3, sixes — 1, sevens — 2, eights — 0, nines — 1. This gives the following table:
Cell | 1 (character) | 2 (energy) | 3 (knowledge) |
|---|---|---|---|
Count | 2 | 1 | 2 |
Cell | 4 (health) | 5 (logic) | 6 (work) |
Count | 1 | 3 | 1 |
Cell | 7 (luck) | 8 (duty) | 9 (mind) |
Count | 2 | 0 | 1 |
It is immediately clear how the principle "number of digits = expression level" works: in the example, there are three fives — logic and intuition are strongly expressed, while there are no eights — the quality "sense of duty" is in a risk zone.
In some popular expositions, not all four working numbers are entered into the table, but only the first two, and zero in the date (for example, 05 instead of 5) may be counted or omitted. These discrepancies are analyzed in the "Controversial" section. Here the canonical variant is fixed: all four working numbers, zero is counted.
Interpretation of Cells 1-9
The general rule for reading by Alexandrov's method: 0 digits — quality not manifested or in the risk zone; 1 — weakly expressed; 2 — normal; 3 or more — strongly expressed, extremes possible. Below is what, according to Alexandrov's method, each cell means. The general meanings of the numbers 1-9 themselves (outside the square) are described in the number cards.
1 — Character, Willpower, Self-Confidence
According to Alexandrov's method, ones show the strength of character and volitional qualities. No ones — it is difficult for a person to defend their opinion, will is weakly expressed. One one — moderate confidence. Two — normal, stable character. Three or more — strong will; according to tradition, the more ones, the more resolute a person is in defending decisions. More on the meaning of the number 1 on the number card.
2 — Energy
Twos in the popular tradition are linked with a person's energy (the term "bioenergy" is also encountered). No twos — little energy, a person quickly becomes depleted (according to tradition). One or two — normal level. Three or more — lots of energy, which, according to tradition, needs to be directed into action, otherwise it seeks an outlet in conflicts. More on the number 2 card.
3 — Interest in Knowledge, Aptitude for Sciences, Memory
Threes by the method are responsible for the interest in learning, aptitude for sciences, and memory. No threes — no pronounced interest in studying (according to tradition, it is shifted to other areas). One or two — normal curiosity. Three or more — strong thirst for knowledge and good memory; an extreme is possible — "bookishness" at the expense of practical affairs (according to tradition). More on the number 3 card.
4 — Health and Physical Condition
Fours are responsible for health and physical condition. No fours — health is in the risk zone, requires attention (according to tradition). One or two — normal. Three or more — strong health and endurance. More on the number 4 card.
5 — Logic, Intuition
Fives by the method are responsible for logical thinking and intuition. No fives — logic is weakly expressed. One or two — normal ratio of logic and intuition. Three or more — developed analytical thinking; according to tradition, an extreme is possible — excessive rationality. More on the number 5 card.
6 — Aptitude for Work, "Skilled Hands"
Sixes are responsible for the attitude toward work and practical dexterity. No sixes — according to tradition, a person is not inclined toward routine physical labor. One or two — normal. Three or more — craftsmanship, "skilled hands," an inclination for crafts and manual work (according to tradition). More on the number 6 card.
7 — Luck, Fortune
Sevens in the popular tradition are linked with luck and fortune. No sevens — fortune is not a strong point. One or two — a normal "streak of luck." Three or more — according to tradition, success more often accompanies such a person. More on the number 7 card.
8 — Sense of Duty, Tolerance, Kindness
Eights are responsible for the sense of duty, tolerance, and kindness. No eights — sense of duty is weakly expressed (according to tradition). One or two — normal. Three or more — strongly developed responsibility; an extreme is possible — hyper-responsibility, when a person takes on others' obligations (according to tradition). More on the number 8 card.
9 — Mind, Memory, Abilities
Nines by the method are linked with the mind, memory, and abilities (they overlap with threes: threes emphasize the interest in knowledge, nines emphasize the intellectual abilities themselves). No nines — intellectual abilities are not the leading trait (according to tradition). One or two — normal. Three or more — strong mind and memory; an extreme is possible — "pedantry," detachment from practice (according to tradition). More on the number 9 card.
Rows, Columns, and Diagonals
In addition to individual cells, according to Alexandrov's method, the lines of the table are also read — rows, columns, and diagonals. The principle is the same: the more digits in a line, the more strongly the corresponding quality is expressed; an empty line — quality in the risk zone.
Line | Cells | According to Alexandrov's Method |
|---|---|---|
1st row | 1, 4, 7 | Purposefulness |
2nd row | 2, 5, 8 | Family qualities |
3rd row | 3, 6, 9 | Stability, habits |
1st column | 1, 2, 3 | Self-esteem |
2nd column | 4, 5, 6 | Providing for the family, household |
3rd column | 7, 8, 9 | Talent |
Ascending diagonal | 3, 5, 7 | Physical needs / spirituality |
Descending diagonal | 1, 5, 9 | Temperament / spirituality |
A caveat: the interpretations of lines — and especially diagonals — vary among popular descriptions. This is expected, since Alexandrov's exact formulations are protected by copyright and available only in his books; below is a general outline according to one of the widespread versions. Discrepancies are listed in the "Controversial" section.
Additional Elements of the Method: Digit "Transitions" and Numbers
In Alexandrov's books, elements going beyond the basic table are also described. In paraphrases of the method, the following are mentioned:
- Digit "transitions" — for example, the transition 22 ↔ 4, when twos under certain conditions "take away" strength from fours, or vice versa;
- destiny number and temperament number — additional indicators calculated from the date of birth.
All these elements are mentioned in popular paraphrases and in quotes from Alexandrov's books, but are not documented or verifiable in open encyclopedic sources: the original sources (books) are not freely available, and full texts have not been found in open archives. More on Alexandrov's method itself on the subpage "Psychomatrix".
Compatibility by the Pythagorean Square
Compatibility is a popular application of the Pythagorean square (the query "pythagorean square compatibility" — about 4,800 impressions per month). The approach in popular practice is:
- Psychomatrices of both partners are built — the same 3x3 tables by dates of birth.
- Key lines are compared: "family" (2, 5, 8), "stability" (3, 6, 9), "purposefulness" (1, 4, 7).
- Strong and empty cells are compared, as well as digit "transitions."
Compatibility conclusions are drawn "according to tradition": for example, it is considered that a coincidence of strong family and stability lines indicates a solid domestic union, and empty cells of one partner may be "complemented" by strong cells of the other. The exact method of Alexandrov is set forth in his books (without free access), so only a general outline is given here without "exact recipes."
A separate Pythagorean square compatibility calculator is being prepared on the site.
"Pythagorean Table": Two Meanings of the Term
In popular practice, the term "Pythagorean table" is used in two senses, and they should be distinguished:
- The letter-number correspondence table 1-9 — a reference tool of Pythagorean numerology, by which name numbers are calculated from letters (A=1, B=2, ..., I=9, then the cycle repeats). The full table and the history of the method are in the article on Pythagorean numerology.
- The 3x3 grid of the Pythagorean square — the same as the numerological square itself: the table in which the frequencies of the digits of the date of birth are entered.
The search query "pythagorean numerology table" (about 500 impressions per month) most often refers specifically to the calculation by date of birth, that is, the 3x3 grid — this calculation is the subject of this article.
What the Numerological Square Is Not
Because of the name "Pythagoras," the query "pythagorean square" regularly attracts mathematical traffic. To avoid confusing topics, let us explicitly examine the differences.
The Pythagorean Theorem and "Square of a Number"
In mathematics, the "Pythagorean square" is the Pythagorean theorem: a² + b² = c², the relationship of the sides of a right triangle. Separately, there is the "square of a number" — exponentiation (2², 3², etc.), as well as "Pythagorean triples" — sets of integers satisfying the theorem. All of this is mathematics and has nothing to do with numerology.
Queries like "pythagorean theorem formula" (about 9,000 impressions per month) are mathematical "garbage" falling into the same search phrase. On this page, the discussion is only about the numerological square — the table of digit frequencies from the date of birth.
The Lo Shu Magic Square
Lo Shu is the only normal magic square of 3x3, known from ancient China (the first image on a turtle shell dates to approximately 2200 BCE). In the Western tradition, it is called the "Seal of Saturn" (Sigillum Saturni). Its parameters: 9 cells, the sum of numbers along any row, column, and diagonal equals 15, the sum of all numbers is 45.
The numerological Pythagorean square is not a magic square: equal sums along lines are not maintained and are not calculated at all — only the frequency of each digit is counted. The similarity is only superficial: both are 3x3 grids with digits from 1 to 9.
Criticism and Scholarly Status
From a scientific standpoint, numbers do not affect a person's life. Critics (in particular, the Skeptic's Dictionary) call numerology superstition and pseudoscience, using numbers "for the appearance of scientific gloss": the outward mathematical quality of calculations does not make them scientific.
Two tests of numerological principles have been conducted with negative results — in Great Britain (1993) and in Israel (2012; the experiment involved a professional numerologist and 200 participants and was repeated twice). In both cases, the numerologist's predictions did not differ from random guessing.
No specific academic studies of the "Pythagorean square" or "psychomatrix" have been found in open sources: there are no encyclopedia articles, no scientific analyses have been discovered, so only general criticism of numerology as a practice is presented here. Reminder: all content on the site is for entertainment and educational purposes and does not constitute medical, psychological, or financial advice.
Controversial: What Is Ambiguous in the Method
The Method Is Modern, Not Pythagorean
The main caveat: the "Pythagorean square" and "psychomatrix" are absent from open encyclopedias (verified: pages in Russian/English Wikipedia return 404, full-text search in open archives — zero results). The connection of the method with the name of A. F. Alexandrov is confirmed only by publisher annotations and popular practice. Therefore, it is correct to call the method modern Russian-language, not a heritage of ancient Pythagoras.
Authorship and Biography of A. F. Alexandrov
Alexander Fyodorovich Alexandrov — a writer and poet, educated as a mathematician (graduated from the mathematics faculty of the Gorky State Pedagogical Institute in 1984; according to the open catalogue, born in 1962 in Gorky, died in 2013). Data taken from the open bibliographic catalogue LiveLib and requiring additional verification: there is no Wikipedia article, and the catalogue contains two author cards, probably of the same person.
Composition and Numbering of Working Numbers
In different books by Alexandrov and popular calculators, the formulations vary: the table is filled with (a) all four working numbers together with the date; (b) only working numbers 1-2; the question of counting zero in the date (05 or 5) is also resolved differently. In this article, the canonical variant is fixed — four working numbers, zero is counted.
Formula of the Third Working Number
Subtracting twice the first digit of the day of birth (34 - 2 x 1 = 32) is a specific feature of Alexandrov's method. In "Western" numerology, there is no such step: there, the date is simply reduced to a single digit (the life path number) by sequential addition — see the instruction "How to Calculate the Life Path Number". Do not confuse these methods: the Pythagorean system uses reduction by modulo 9, while the Pythagorean square has its own scheme of working numbers.
Cell and Line Interpretations Vary Among Sources
The composition of "what is responsible for what" generally matches in popular descriptions, but the details — especially for cells 6, 8, 9, and the diagonals — vary. Alexandrov's exact formulations are copyrighted text, so only a general outline "according to one of the popular interpretations" is given here.
"Transitions" and Additional Numbers Are Not Verifiable
"Digit transitions" (22 ↔ 4), destiny number, and temperament number are mentioned in Alexandrov's method (including in quotes from his books), but are not documented in open encyclopedic sources. Original sources without free access are a gap for verification.
The Term "Psychomatrix" Is Not Documented in Dictionaries
The term "psychomatrix" is not documented in dictionaries and encyclopedias; the exact date and author of its introduction are not confirmed by open sources.
Gaps: What Is Honestly Not Verified
- Full texts of Alexandrov's books are not freely available (search in open archives — zero results), so the interpretation method is available only in paraphrase.
- The exact years of the first editions of the books (1990s) are not confirmed by catalogues: editions in 2007, 2015, and 2017 are documented.
- No specific academic studies or criticism of the "Pythagorean square" itself have been found — only general criticism of numerology is available.
- Detailed interpretations of lines (especially diagonals) and "transitions" require verification against the original source before publication.
