What Is the Expression Number
The Expression Number is a numerological indicator obtained by summing the numerical values of all the letters of a person's full name. According to tradition, it reflects natural talents, abilities, and potential — what a person is endowed with "from birth," before life circumstances began to shape their character.
Unlike the life path number, which is calculated from the date of birth and interpreted as a "life mission," the expression number is tied exclusively to the name. In the Western numerological tradition, the first and last name are used for calculation; in Russian practice, a patronymic is often added, which yields a different result. This is one reason why the same name in different schools can produce different numbers — and why the system used should always be specified in the calculation.
Important: the term "expression number" is a construct of 20th-century popular numerology. It does not have a separate encyclopedic article in either Russian or English Wikipedia. In Russian practice, the more common variants are "name number" or "destiny number" (although the latter term is ambiguous — more on this below). In the English-language tradition, Expression Number or Destiny Number is used. Different names for the same calculation are a source of confusion that we will not smooth over but will honestly show.
How to Calculate the Expression Number
The calculation method is structurally the same, but the letter-to-number correspondence table differs. There are two main approaches — Pythagorean and Chaldean.
By the Pythagorean Table
Letters of the Latin alphabet receive values from 1 to 9 in order:
Letter | A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Number | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
The cycle repeats: J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9, S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8.
For the Russian alphabet, an analogous principle is used — letters are distributed in order from А=1 to Я=9 with cyclical repetition.
By the Chaldean Table (Cheiro)
In the Chaldean school as presented by Cheiro, letters receive values from 1 to 8, and the number 9 is considered "sacred" and is not assigned to any letter. The table differs from the Pythagorean: letters are distributed by "vibration" groups — 1 (A, J, S), 2 (B, K, T), 3 (C, L, U), 4 (D, M, V), 5 (E, N, W), 6 (F, O, X), 7 (G, P, Y), 8 (H, Q, Z). Cheiro himself acknowledged that the origin of the system "is lost in antiquity," and no ancient Chaldean numerological texts confirming it have survived.
Step-by-Step Algorithm
- Write out the full name: first name + last name (in the Western tradition) or first name + last name + patronymic (in the Russian tradition).
- Convert each letter to a numerical value using the chosen table.
- Sum all the resulting numbers.
- If the sum is a two-digit number, add the digits until a single digit (1–9) is obtained. Exception: master numbers 11 and 22 (and in Russian practice sometimes 33) are not reduced to single digits if they appeared at an intermediate stage.
Calculation Example
Let us take the name Ivan Ivanov (using the Pythagorean table):
- И = 1, В = 2, А = 1, Н = 5 → 1 + 2 + 1 + 5 = 9
- И = 1, В = 2, А = 1, Н = 5, О = 6, В = 2 → 1 + 2 + 1 + 5 + 6 + 2 = 17
Sum: 9 + 17 = 26 → 2 + 6 = 8. The expression number of Ivan Ivanov is 8.
The same calculation using the Chaldean table yields a different result, since the letters receive different numerical values. This is normal and expected: different systems — different results.
Meaning of the Expression Number by System
Pythagorean Tradition
The Pythagoreans (6th century BCE) practiced isopsephy — summing the numerical values of letters of the Greek alphabet. According to Aristotle, this tradition was part of the Pythagorean worldview, in which numbers were considered the foundation of the universe. The application of numerology to a person's name is a form of onomancy (divination by name), which gained currency in various cultures.
In the Pythagorean system, each number from 1 to 9 (as well as master numbers 11 and 22) has its own meaning. These meanings are interpreted "according to tradition" and have no scientific confirmation:
- 1 — leadership, independence, the primal cause
- 2 — cooperation, diplomacy, sensitivity
- 3 — creativity, self-expression, optimism
- 4 — stability, order, diligence
- 5 — change, freedom, adventure
- 6 — responsibility, harmony, care for loved ones
- 7 — spirituality, analysis, introspection
- 8 — material success, power, ambition
- 9 — humanitarianism, completing cycles, wisdom
- 11 — intuition, spiritual awakening (master number)
- 22 — great accomplishments, practical wisdom (master number)
Chaldean Tradition
Cheiro in "Book of Numbers" (1926) gives each number its own name and characteristic. The system uses "series" of numbers: 1–10–19–28, 2–11–20–29, and so on. People with the same root number are considered connected by shared qualities, and between the series there exist relationships of "affinity" and "dissonance." For example, the series 1–10–19–28 is "sympathetic" to the series 2–11–20–29.
According to Cheiro, the expression number (he uses the term "name number") reflects not so much natural talents as the expression of character in society — how a person manifests themselves in the external world.
Kabbalah and Gematria
Gematria — assigning numerical values from 1 to 400 to letters of the Hebrew alphabet. This is an ancient hermeneutic technique: gematria is the 29th of the 32 rules of Talmudic exegesis. The first documented case of gematria is an Assyrian inscription from the 8th century BCE on the wall of Khorsabad. However, "Kabbalistic numerology" as an independent school is a popular 20th-century reception: in Kabbalah itself there is no separate "numerology" as a discipline.
Compatibility by Expression Number
According to tradition, people with the same expression number possess similar qualities and understand each other well. According to Cheiro, between the "series" of numbers there exist harmonious and disharmonious combinations: for example, 1–10–19–28 is "naturally sympathetic" to 2–11–20–29. People with the same root number (or from the "series") are said to get along well with each other.
An important caveat: the specific method of calculating compatibility by expression number is a popular practice without an original source. Cheiro has qualitative descriptions of birth number compatibility, but no compatibility tables specifically for the expression number have been found in his works. Compatibility as a calculator is a construct of modern numerological websites. Meanwhile, in the Pythagorean school, no compatibility tables by expression number have been found in open sources at all.
In numerological practice, it is also customary to compare the expression number with the life path number: if they match or are in a "harmonious" relationship, this is considered a favorable sign. However, there are no specific criteria for "harmony" between these numbers in the original sources — this is the domain of practitioners' interpretations.
Differences Between Schools and Controversial Points
Contradiction in Terminology
"Destiny number" in Russian practice more often means the life path number (by date of birth), while in the Western tradition it means the Expression/Destiny Number (by name). This is a fundamental difference: the same name in different traditions points to different calculations. We do not smooth over this contradiction but show it — because understanding the differences is more important than illusory clarity.
Different Tables
The Pythagorean and Chaldean tables yield different numbers for the same name. They must not be mixed: the system used should always be specified. Agrippa (16th century) used his own table (A–I = 1–9, K–S = 10–90, T–Z = 100–900), which differs from both.
Chaldean Attribution
Cheiro describes the Chaldean system as "ancient" but himself acknowledges that its origin "is not recorded." No ancient Chaldean numerological texts have survived. The attribution is a later tradition, not a historical fact.
Scientific Unprovenness
Numerology is not a science. Skeptical tests conducted in the United Kingdom (1993) and in Israel (2012, 200 participants) yielded negative results: numerological predictions were no different from random guessing. All interpretations in this article are given as "according to tradition," not as established facts.
Historical Context
- Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BCE) — founder of Pythagoreanism, according to Aristotle practiced isopsephy.
- Agrippa (1486–1535) — applied arithmancy to the Latin alphabet in "De occulta philosophia" (1533).
- Cheiro (1866–1936) — Indian numerologist, popularizer of the Chaldean system in the 20th century.
- The term "numerology" in English is recorded from approximately 1907; before that the discipline was called arithmancy.
