Number 5 in Numerology: Meaning and Significance
Five is the midpoint of the first decade. In the Pythagorean tradition, number 5 was called "the number of marriage" and "the number of justice"; in the Chaldean school (Cheiro) it symbolizes the planet Mercury and is considered "alive" and changeable. Popular descriptions of "fr…
Number 5 in the pythagorean : method and number meanings tradition
According to Agrippa, who synthesized the Pythagorean tradition, five is the exact midpoint of "the universal number" 10: pairs (9+1, 8+2, 7+3, 6+4) are divided equally by it. Therefore the Pythagoreans called five "the number of marriage" (wedlock) and "the number of justice."
In Agrippa's "scale of five": 5 senses, 5 powers of the soul, 5 fingers, 5 "wandering planets," 5 kinds of mixed bodies, 5 types of animals. Pagan philosophers dedicated five to Mercury, believing its dignity surpasses four to the same degree that the living surpasses the nonliving.
Agrippa also transmits a Christian reading: five is the "seal of the Holy Spirit," the "number of the cross," marked by the five wounds of Christ; in "this number," according to his words, Noah found grace with God and was preserved in the flood. This is an interpretation within an occult treatise, not one used in numerological systems as such.
In Agrippa's Latin scale, the letter E corresponds to 5; in the modern Pythagorean scheme (by position in the alphabet, cycle 1–9), E = 5 and N = 5.
Strengths and weaknesses
По халдейской школе (Cheiro; пересказ школы, а не универсальная истина) к сильным сторонам числа 5 относят:
- «замечательную упругость характера» — люди пятёрки быстро «отскакивают» от самых тяжёлых ударов, как ртуть (quicksilver), которую символизирует Меркурий; «удары судьбы не оставляют вмятин»;
- скорость мысли и решений, лёгкость в общении, способность уживаться в любой среде.
Слабые стороны из тех же фактов:
- люди пятёрки истощают нервную силу и нередко становятся жертвами нервных срывов;
- в напряжении легко раздражаются и вспыльчивы, «не выносят дураков»;
- по Cheiro, склонность к переутомлению нервной системы (неврит, тики, бессонница); «лучшие лекарства — сон, покой и тишина»; осторожные месяцы — июнь, сентябрь, декабрь; важные для здоровья годы — 14-й, 23-й, 41-й, 50-й.
Number 5 in the chaldean : method and number meanings tradition
According to the Chaldean school (Cheiro), described in the "Book of Numbers," the "ancient Chaldean and Hebrew alphabet" was created by the Chaldeans — "masters of the magical arts" — and passed on to the Jews; letters receive values by "vibration" rather than position in the alphabet, and the number 9 is absent from the table: it represents the nine-lettered name of God. Cheiro himself acknowledges that the system's origin "is lost in antiquity"; no direct Chaldean texts have survived — what we have is a 19th–20th century reconstruction, an interpretation of one school rather than a verified fact of ancient history.
Cheiro writes that "number 5 symbolizes the planet Mercury and is versatile and mercurial in all its characteristics" (a quote from a public-domain text). "People of number 5" are those born on the 5th, 14th, or 23rd of any month (1+4=5 and 2+3=5); traits are more pronounced in the "period of 5" — Gemini (21.05–20.06, Mercury in its positive aspect) and Virgo (21.08–20.09, Mercury in its negative aspect).
Number 5 in the kabbalistic : methods and the meaning of numbers tradition
In gematria — the method of assigning numerical values to letters and words — the letter Heh (ה) has the value 5; gematria itself goes back to antiquity (an inscription of Sargon II, 8th century BCE, on the wall of Khorsabad, built "according to the numerical value of his name").
Five is also connected to the five-lettered name — the Pentagrammaton יהשוה (YHSVH): a form of the name of Jesus obtained by inserting the letter Shin (ש) into the Tetragrammaton יהוה; it was first recorded by Renaissance occultists (Pico della Mirandola and others). The idea became central to the Rosicrucians; it was introduced to modern occultism by Éliphas Lévi and Papus, and in the Golden Dawn it is a foundational "inner" teaching.
Number 5 in the vedic : methods and number meanings tradition
In popular Vedic practice, the number 5 corresponds to Mercury (Budha) — one of the nine planets of the Navagraha in Indian astrology. Traditionally, it is considered that five bestows sociability, a lively intellect, talent for trade, and adaptability. A caveat: the "number–planet" table is a particular interpretation of a modern school, not documented in encyclopedic sources; "Vedic numerology" itself is a practice of the 20th–21st centuries, and in traditional Jyotish numerology is distinguished only as a subdivision of Ankajyotish.
Number 5 in the chinese : numbers, lo shu, and the kua number tradition
In the Chinese tradition, five occupies the central cell of the magical Lo Shu square: even numbers stand at the corners, odd numbers form a cross, and the sum across any row, column, or diagonal equals 15, so five traditionally symbolizes center and balance. Five is also associated with the element Earth — in the Wu Xing system (five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, water), which underlies Chinese numerical symbolism; according to the Nine Star Ki scheme, Earth corresponds to numbers 2, 5, and 8. In the folk homophonic tradition, the reading is dual: in Mandarin "five" (wǔ) sounds like "I" (wǔ), while in Cantonese it sounds like "not." Thus, for example, 53 is read both as "my life" and as "not born," and 58 as both "I prosper" and "no prosperity."
Number 5 in the mayan : tzolkin calendar, kins, and solar seals tradition
In the Mayan Tzolkin calendar, days are numbered 1–13 — "tones" — so five traditionally corresponds to the fifth tone of the 13-day cycle. In the modern reconstruction of "Mayan numerology" (the Dreamspell system of José Argüelles, 1990), the fifth tone is called "Harmonic"; tone names are part of a 20th-century interpretation and are not documented in encyclopedic sources. In the Mayan vigesimal numeral system, five holds a special place in the notation of numbers: it was represented by a horizontal bar (dot = 1, bar = 5, shell = 0).
Number 5 in the tibetan : mewa, parkha, and the calendar tradition
In the Tibetan tradition, numbers 1–9 are the numbers of mewa, symbols of the year of birth, not "destiny numbers" in the Western sense: this is a different system calculated according to the Tibetan calendar. Mewa 5 is not the same as the five of Western numerology — only the numbering coincides. If your mewa by year of birth is 5, see the "Mewa 5" card (/statyi/meva-5) and the Mewa calculator (/kalkulyator-mevy).
Traditionally, it is considered that mewa 5 is yellow, element — earth. Together with mewa 2 and 8, it belongs to the group of animals Tiger, Snake, Monkey, Pig. According to the text of the "White Emerald" as retold in the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, the bearer of mewa 5 is attributed strong faith, a stable mind, great knowledge, and powerful speech, as well as readiness to help orphans; life expectancy — approximately 50 years, two obstacles. For pacification, a statue of Buddha, a stupa, or a Dorje Phurba seal is traditionally recommended.
