Number 4 in Numerology: Meaning and Significance
The number 4 in numerology is the number of the four elements, the four cardinal directions, and the Pythagorean tetractys: in the Western tradition it symbolizes stability, solidity, and the material world. Different schools interpret it differently: in the Chaldean system (Chei…

In the Pythagorean method, letters are assigned values 1–9 by their position in the alphabet; numbers are reduced to a single digit by adding digits; 11 and 22 ("master numbers") are not reduced.
The four itself is the "root and foundation of all numbers": it signifies solidity, which, according to Agrippa, is demonstrated by the quadrilateral shape. The Pythagoreans called it "the eternal fountain of nature" and sealed their oath with it; as Agrippa transcribed it: "I swear by the pure intelligence of the number four, which is sacred and is the source of nature, eternal, the parent of the mind."
In the Pythagorean scheme, the four governs the material principle: 4 elements, 4 qualities, 4 humors, 4 seasons, 4 winds; according to Agrippa, 3 pertains to the soul, 4 to the body, and 7 = 3+4 unites soul and body. The musical system is derived from the tetractys: 4:3 (fourth), 3:2 (fifth), 2:1 (octave).
Strengths and weaknesses
По халдейской школе (Cheiro; пересказ школы) к сильным сторонам числа 4 относят:
- реформаторский ум, независимость от правил;
- позитивность и неортодоксальность взглядов, интерес к социальным вопросам;
- преданность немногим настоящим друзьям, готовность принять сторону «слабого» (under-dog);

Number 4 in the chaldean : method and number meanings tradition
According to Cheiro, the "ancient Chaldean and Hebrew alphabet" — "its origin is lost in antiquity; it is said to have been created by the Chaldeans, masters of the magical arts, and handed down to the Hebrews" — assigns values to letters by "vibration" rather than by alphabetical position. The distinction from the Pythagorean system: numbers 1–9 are tied to planets, and in the Chaldean school 4 = Uranus, allied with the Sun (1), written as 4—1.
Cheiro's assessment of the four is the polar opposite of the Pythagorean view: "the number 4 is not considered a lucky number; people under it are usually misunderstood; they work hard and earnestly to realize their ideas, but their plans are difficult and usually meet with strong opposition." Together with 8, the four is called "unlucky": those born under numbers 4 and 8 are advised to avoid numbers that give 4 or 8 and "never to increase their power"; 4 (Uranus) and 8 (Saturn) are antagonistic to 9 (Mars).
Number 4 in the kabbalistic : methods and the meaning of numbers tradition
Gematria is a method of Jewish exegesis: words are assigned the sum of the numerical values of their letters, and words with equal gematria are symbolically connected; the term appears from the second century CE onward and is widely used in Kabbalah. The fourth letter, dalet (ד), corresponds to the number 4; according to the Brockhaus and Efron Jewish Encyclopedia (1908–1913), 4 ranks after 7 and 3 in importance in Judaism, surpassing 10.
In the Tanakh, the four primarily represents the cardinal directions and "movement in all directions": four chariots of angels (Zech. 6:1–5), four spirits with four faces (Ezek. 1:5), four severe punishments as a symbol of complete judgment (Ezek. 14:21). In Talmudic literature: four Torah passages in tefillin, four cups of wine at the Seder, four questions of the Haggadah; among multiples of four, the number 40 is significant (40 years of wandering, 40 days of Moses on Sinai).
The key quaternity of Kabbalah is the Tetragrammaton, the four-letter name of God יהוה. The tetractys is also linked to Kabbalah: from the letters of the Tetragrammaton it yields 72 by gematria; according to Raphael Patai, it influenced early Kabbalah; and it is associated with the Tree of Life composed of ten sephirot (according to Dion Fortune).
Number 4 in the vedic : methods and number meanings tradition
In popular Vedic practice (books on Vedic numerology, such as those by Baerba Sturite), the number 4 corresponds to Rahu — the ascending northern lunar node, one of the two "mythical" planets of the Navagraha. This is a particular school's interpretation, not an encyclopedic fact: the "number — planet" table is not documented in open sources, and in traditional Jyotish, numerology is not distinguished as a separate discipline (there is only the subsection of Ankajyotish). In the Chaldean system (Cheiro), the four is ruled by Uranus — different schools assign different rulers; there is no single "correct" ruler; all interpretations are "by tradition."
Number 4 in the chinese : numbers, lo shu, and the kua number tradition
In the Chinese tradition, the two sides of the four are polar opposites, and both are real. By homophony, "four" (四, sì) sounds nearly identical to "death" (死, sǐ), especially close in Cantonese; hence tetraphobia: in East Asian buildings, floors with the digit 4 are skipped, phone numbers with a four are cheaper, and Nokia avoided using 4 in models for the Asian market. But in the Teochew dialect and in historical tradition, the four is an auspicious even number: the four mandarins, red envelopes containing $4/40/44, and the musical note "fa" (发) sounds like "prosperity"; even 54 in Cantonese reads as "will not die." Both interpretations are regionally conditioned — modern urban China leans toward "death," while the historical tradition favors fortune; this contradiction should not be smoothed over. In the Lo Shu magic square, the four sits in a corner among the even numbers (the sum along any line is 15); the square is associated with feng shui and the bagua, and in the Western tradition it is called the "Seal of Saturn."
Number 4 in the mayan : tzolkin calendar, kins, and solar seals tradition
A numerology proper — a doctrine of numbers of fate — is not documented among the ancient Maya: what exists is the sacred tzolkin calendar (260 days) and the vigesimal counting system. In the tzolkin, each day carries a number 1–13 ("tone") and the name of one of 20 day-signs, so the four is the fourth tone of a 13-day cycle. The names of the "13 tones of creation," including the fourth tone "Self-Existing," are part of the modern Dreamspell reconstruction (José Argüelles, 1990) and are not documented in encyclopedic sources. In popular interpretation, the fourth tone is associated with form, measure, and order, but this is an interpretation "by tradition," not a fact from the primary Maya sources.
Number 4 in the tibetan : mewa, parkha, and the calendar tradition
In the Tibetan tradition, numbers 1–9 are the numbers of mewas, symbols of the year of birth, not "numbers of fate" in the Western sense: the system is different, and the calculation is based on the Tibetan calendar, not the date of birth. Mewa 4 is not the same as the four of Western numerology — only the numbering coincides. If your mewa by year of birth is 4, see the "Mewa 4" card and the Mewa calculator.
According to tradition, mewa 4 is green, and its element is wood. Together with mewas 1 and 7, it belongs to the group of animals Mouse, Rabbit, Horse, Bird. According to the text of the "White Emerald" as retold in the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, the possessor of mewa 4 enjoys travel and intellectual work, is neat, sensitive, and easily becomes nervous; life expectancy is about 65 years, with four obstacles. For pacification, tradition recommends a statue of Vajrapani and offerings to the Nagas.
Disclaimer: the information is based on the traditional text "White Emerald" as retold in the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia; it is symbolic, not a literal prophecy.
