Number 3 in Numerology: Meaning and Significance
The number 3 in numerology is a symbol of the triad and trinity across many traditions, and it is the smallest odd prime number. Traditionally, the number three is associated with creativity and power, though the interpretations of different schools diverge significantly: in the…
Number 3 in the pythagorean : method and number meanings tradition
In the Pythagorean method, letters of the Latin alphabet are assigned values of 1–9, and multi-digit numbers are reduced to a single digit by adding their digits; 11 and 22 ("master" numbers) are not reduced. Here the triad is the only number equal to the sum of all lesser numbers, and the only one whose sum with lesser numbers equals their product.
According to Plutarch, the Pythagoreans called the triad Justice. Agrippa, who transmitted this tradition, called 3 the first indivisible (that is, prime) number, a sacred number and a number of perfection; the Pythagoreans used it in consecrations and purifications — prayers and sacrifices were repeated three times (Virgil: "odd numbers are pleasing to the god").
In this tradition, the triad is also connected to the soul: according to Agrippa, "the number three relates to the soul by virtue of its tripartite power — rational, irritable, and appetitive"; a parallel can be found in Plato's division of the soul into rational, spirited, and appetitive parts. Note: in the Pythagorean school, the triad is not associated with a planet — the link to Jupiter belongs to the Chaldean school (see below).
Strengths and weaknesses
По школе Cheiro (пересказ школы, а не объективная оценка) к сильным сторонам числа 3 относят:
- скрытое честолюбие — сильную внутреннюю мотивацию;
- способность повелевать и диктовать — лидерские качества;
Compatibility
Compatible with numbers: 3, 6, 9.
Number 3 in the chaldean : method and number meanings tradition
According to the Chaldean school (Cheiro, "Book of Numbers"), the "ancient Chaldean and Hebrew alphabet" was created by the Chaldeans — "masters of the magical arts" — and passed on to the Jews; its origin, in Cheiro's own words, "is lost in antiquity." Letters receive values by "vibration" rather than position in the alphabet; there is no number 9 in the alphabet: in the "Supreme Sphere," 9 represents the nine-letter name of God. The value 3 is assigned to the letters C, G, L, and S; Cheiro gives an example: adding such a letter to the name "John Smith" changes the name number from 17 to 20, and then to 2.
Cheiro writes that "the number 3 symbolizes the planet Jupiter," which plays a crucial role in both astrology and all numerological systems; 3 is the beginning of "one of the major lines of force" from 3 to 9, with a special connection to every third number — 3, 6, 9. Correspondences according to Cheiro: Jupiter = 3, Thursday = 3; the "period of the number 3" includes Sagittarius (November 21 – December 20, Jupiter positive) and Pisces (February 19 – March 20, Jupiter negative).
Number 3 in the каббалистическая : методы и значение чисел tradition
In Kabbalah, the triad is present through gematria — a method of Jewish exegesis that assigns words the sum of the numerical values of their letters; words with equal gematria are considered symbolically related (for example, 358 is the gematria of serpent, messiah, sacrifice, and renewal). The term dates from the 2nd century CE; analogues of gematria include Arabic abjad, Indian akshara-sankhya, and Greek isopsephy. In standard gematria, the letter Gimel (ג) has the value 3; in the method of mispar kidmi, the value of Gimel is the sum of the preceding letters, that is 1+2+3=6.
In the treatise "Sefer Yetzirah," the 22 letters are divided into three mother letters (Aleph, Mem, Shin), seven double letters (among them Gimel), and twelve simple letters; together with the ten sefirot, they form the "32 wondrous paths of wisdom." Importantly, Gimel is a double letter, not a mother letter.
Number 3 in the ведическая : метод и значения чисел tradition
In the Vedic tradition, the number 3 is traditionally associated with Jupiter — the teacher planet Guru (Brihaspati) from the list of navagrahas. In popular Vedic numerology, the triad symbolizes wisdom, teaching, generosity, and optimism, as well as authority and the ability to lead. In Hindu numerical symbolism, the triad is a sacred number: triloka (three worlds), Trimurti, three gunas. Note: the scheme "number = planet" is not documented in encyclopedic sources — it is an interpretation from modern popular practice, traced back to anka-jyotish, a subdivision of hora (jyotish); in classical jyotish, no separate numerological discipline is recognized.
Number 3 in the китайская : числа, ло-шу и число гуа tradition
In Chinese tradition, the number three (三, sān) is an odd, yang number: according to the doctrine of symbols and numbers (xiang shu), odd numbers are considered male and yang. In the Lo Shu magic square, odd numbers form a cross around the central five, while even numbers occupy the corners; the sum along any row, column, and diagonal equals 15, and the square is traditionally associated with the eight trigrams of the bagua (Later Heaven). By homophony, the number three sounds like the character for "life" (生, shēng), so in folk tradition it is considered lucky and symbolizes growth and multiplicity; however, it also resembles the word for "separation" (散, sàn). In the Nine Star Ki system, the number 3 corresponds to the Wood element, linking the triad to growth and creativity.
Number 3 in the майя: календарь цолькин, кины и печати tradition
In Mayan numerology (in its modern form), the number 3 is the third tone of the sacred Tzolkin calendar; in the Dreamspell system it is called "Electric." According to tradition, tone 3 is responsible for activation and action — joining energies, launching processes. Note: the ancient Maya had no documented numerological tradition, and the names and interpretations of the thirteen "tones of creation" belong to the reconstruction by José Argüelles (Dreamspell calendar, 1990) and are not documented in encyclopedic sources.
Number 3 in the тибетская : мева, парка и календарь tradition
In the Tibetan tradition, the numbers 1–9 are meva numbers — symbols of the year of birth, not "destiny numbers" in the Western sense: this is a separate system calculated according to the Tibetan calendar. Meva 3 is not the same as the triad of Western numerology; only the numbering coincides. If your meva by year of birth is 3, see the "Meva 3" card and the meva calculator.
According to tradition, meva 3 is blue, and its element is water. Together with mevas 6 and 9, it belongs to the group of animals Ox, Dragon, Sheep, and Dog. According to the text of the "White Emerald" as retold by the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, the owner of meva 3 is attributed greed and cunning, a love of sleep, changeable decisions, and ambitions that are difficult to satisfy; life expectancy is around 50 years, with three obstacles. For pacification, tradition recommends a statue of Vajrasattva and the recitation of his mantra.
