Number 1 in Numerology: Meaning and Significance

In the Pythagorean tradition, the unit is the origin of numbers: numbers are plural, while the unit is their source. Odd numbers were considered masculine, even numbers feminine, and the unit was neutral, capable through addition of turning even into odd and vice versa. Nicomachus of Gerasa and Boethius insisted that the unit is not a number but the source of the number; Plotinus's "the One" is the supreme reality; Philo called one the number of God.

Agrippa, who synthesized the tradition in the 16th century, wrote that the unit is the "common measure, source, and beginning of all numbers," that "number is nothing but the repetition of the One," that "multiplied by itself, it produces only itself," and that "all things desire that One, for all things came from One" — just as there is "one God, one world of the one God, one Sun of the one world." According to Agrippa, Pythagoras (via Eusebius) called Unity God, and the Pythagoreans (via Plutarch) called it Apollo.

In modern Pythagorean numerology, letters of the alphabet are assigned values 1–9 based on their position, and numbers are reduced by summing their digits; 11 and 22 are not reduced. Agrippa's table represents a separate "Agrippan" method.

According to the Chaldean school as presented by Cheiro, the unit symbolizes the Sun: "The Number 1 in this symbolism denotes the Sun. It is the beginning — that from which all the other nine numbers were created. The basis of all numbers is One; the basis of all life is One." Numbers 1–9, Cheiro maintained, "were given to the planets which govern our system in the most remote ages of civilization" and were used by all schools of occultism.

In his planetary number system, the Sun = 1; Sunday and the zodiac sign Leo (July 21 – August 20) carry the "compound number" 1—4. "People of number 1" are born on the 1st, 10th, 19th, or 28th of any month; their qualities are strengthened if the birth fell during the "House of the Sun" (July 21 – August 28) or during the period from March 21 to April 28, when the Sun enters the vernal equinox point.

Gematria is a method of Jewish exegesis in which letters are assigned numerical values, and words with equal sums are considered symbolically connected; the term appears in rabbinical literature from the 2nd century CE onward and is widely used in Kabbalah. The first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, aleph (א), represents the number 1, and at the beginning of Hebrew years it denotes 1000. Aleph symbolizes the unity of God; in the "Sefer Yetzirah" it is the "king over the breath," through which air was formed in the universe.

In the Christian Kabbalah of Agrippa, the name of the supreme God is expressed by "one simplest letter" (Iod, י), and in his "Scale of the One," the unit corresponds to the single divine essence, the world soul, the Sun, and Lucifer. For Cheiro, Kabbalah was merely one of the source traditions, and his table (1 = Sun) is a private reconstruction, not classical gematria.

In the Vedic tradition, the number 1 is traditionally associated with the Sun (Surya) — the first of the nine planets of the navagraha, to which a leadership, defining energy is attributed. In popular Vedic practice, traceable to Jyotish, the unit corresponds to the soul number (day of birth reduced to 1–9) and the destiny number (reduction of the full date). In traditional Jyotish, numerology is distinguished merely as a subdivision of horary astrology — ankajyotish — so the scheme "1 = Sun" is an interpretation of a modern school rather than ancient Vedic teaching.

In the Chinese tradition, the unit occupies the lower (northern) position of the magic Lo Shu square and is associated with the water element and the trigram Kan: in Chinese cartography, north is placed at the bottom, and the sum along any line of the square equals 15. According to folk homophonic symbolism, the number 1 (一) is considered neither lucky nor unlucky: it means "first place" for winners but can also indicate loneliness. Unlike Western schools, here the unit is not a "destiny number" derived from reducing the date but a position in a cosmological scheme and an element of the language's phonetic symbolism.

In Mayan numerology, the number 1 opens the sacred Tzolkin calendar (260 days = 13 numbers × 20 day names): the unit is the first number in the 13-day cycle of tones, and it marks the beginning of every cycle's count. In modern interpretation (José Argüelles's Dreamspell system, 1990), the first tone is called "Magnetic" and endowed with the energy of initiation and attraction — this is a 20th-century reconstruction, not an ancient practice. In the Mayan vigesimal notation, the unit is represented by a dot, while zero is a shell.

In the Tibetan tradition, numbers 1–9 are used not as "destiny numbers" in the Western sense but as mewa numbers — symbols of the birth year arranged according to a 3×3 magic square. Mewa 1 is not the same as the unit of Western numerology: it is a different system with a different calculation, based on the Tibetan calendar rather than the date of birth. Traditionally, mewa 1 is white, and its element is iron. Together with mewas 4 and 7, it belongs to the group of animals Mouse, Rabbit, Horse, and Bird. According to the text of the "White Emerald" as retold in the Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia, the bearer of mewa 1 is said to have a brave and kind heart yet be nervous and short-tempered; life expectancy is approximately 71 years, with four obstacles.
