Kabbalistic Numerology
Definition: a designation for numerical practices of Kabbalah; the core is gematria — the assignment of numerical values to letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Gematria is the 29th of the 32 hermeneutical rules of Talmudic exegesis; the term in English has been known since the 17th century from translations of Pico della Mirandola, and it does not appear in the Tanakh. "Kabbalistic numerology" as an independent school is a popular reception: within Kabbalah itself, there is no separate "numerology" as a discipline.
