Gematria
Definition: the assignment of numerical values to letters of the Hebrew alphabet and the interpretation of words and phrases by the sum of their values; the foundation of Kabbalistic exegesis. The first documented case is an Assyrian inscription from the 8th century BC: the wall of Khorsabad, 16,283 cubits long, was built "according to the numerical value of the name" of Sargon II. The word chai (חי, "life") equals 18, so 18 is a lucky number in Jewish tradition.
