Number of the Beast (666)
Definition: a number from the Book of Revelation (13:18), associated with the beast; a classic example of gematria interpretation. In most manuscripts it is 666, but Papyrus 115 and Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus give the variant 616; the scientific consensus is that 666 is linked by gematria to Nero (נרון קסר = 666, the Latin form = 616). In the idealist interpretation, six represents "incompleteness" as opposed to the divine seven; 666 is a triangular number (1+2+…+36 = 666), and the name of Jesus (Iesous) equals 888 in gematria.
